A Message about Mormon Helping Hands

by Steve Demetras
Public Affairs High Councilman
Under the direction of Elder L. Whitney Clayton of the Presidency of the Seventy, all of the stakes of the Church in California have been encouraged to coordinate activities for a statewide Mormon Helping Hands day of service on Saturday, May 8, 2010. The unifying theme is “Renewing California Parks."

The purposes of this state-wide event are to:
       Help Improve Communities
       Strengthen Church Members
       Share the Gospel Indirectly
       Build Relationships with Opinion Leaders
Enhance the Reputation of the Church
Under the banner of “Mormon Helping Hands,” Lodi Stake members will join with them to renew and beautify local parks and community areas in four areas of our Stake; Lodi, Galt, Ione-Jackson, and San Andreas-Murphys. While Church members have always been involved in community service, this is an opportunity for all of us in our area to concentrate our efforts on one day and in one area—California’s parks.
We all enjoy our local parks and spend time there, particularly with our young children. We will be blessed to help beautify these locations for other families. Besides helping our local parks, it will be satisfying to know that throughout the state similar improvements are being made.
We will be identified by our distinctive vests as we give service. It will be a great chance to rub shoulders with our neighbors and friends of other faiths in a non-threatening way. By such opportunities we can improve the reputation of the Church and generate awareness about the Church.
Please make this a priority event for your family as we give service to others, an important characteristic of the followers of Jesus Christ.
In this blog you can find the projects in your city. Please share it with others, and we'll see you May 8!
